CUGB
Undergraduate Major:Petroleum Engineering

1. Major Introduction

Petroleum Engineering is a multidisciplinary engineering science which is developed for the inter-penetration of oil and gas geology theory, drilling engineering, production engineering, reservoir engineering, transportation engineering, and management engineering. This specialty combines petroleum geology theory and development engineering technology to build the knowledge system made up of oil and gas reservoir geological modeling, oil and gas field development engineering designing, and construction and management of oil and gas production, etc. The aim is to give students a fundamental training as novice petroleum engineers. Graduates are widely employed by China’s biggest three oil companies, the Ministry of Land and Resources, and coal, geological and mineral enterprises, universities and research institutes, following their career in technological development related to petroleum and natural gas, coal and coal-bed methane, tight oil and shale gas as well as in teaching, scientific research and management.

2. Academic Objectives

This major takes oil and gas geological theory, reservoir engineering, oil and gas mining technology as the main teaching contents. Students will learn about the knowledge and the frontier theoretical and technological developments of oil and gas exploration in the field of engineering geology, reservoir engineering designing, construction and mining reservoir management, etc. Students will also learn a foreign language and will have the basic abilities for international communications. The aims are to train students to become inter-disciplinary talents of geological theory and engineering technological development, and to establish the resources for graduate students and other senior personnel trainings. After 3 to 5 years’ practice, students are expected to gain the qualities and abilities of petroleum engineers and will become technological backbones in research teams or production enterprises.

3. Academic Requirements

The graduates should love our motherland, support the leadership of the Communist Party of China, be committed, be hardworking and love a simple living, obey the law, and have good moral, social and professional ethics.

The graduates should be both physically and mentally healthy, master certain basic military knowledge, have the necessary military training, and meet the requirements of the national college sports and military training.

The graduates will learn a foreign language. They will gain the basic communication abilities and will be able to smoothly read books and periodicals in the foreign language. They will learn about petroleum engineering and will also know about the fundamental theories of mathematics, physics, chemistry, petroleum geology, sedimentary petrology and other engineering sciences. They will receive the basic training as petroleum engineers and will gain the basic abilities for oil and gas well drilling and completion, for design, production and management of oil and gas engineering, for preliminary practical studies, as well as for scientific and technological development.

4. Length of Schooling and Degree

The length of schooling is four years of full-time study. Students will be awarded the Bachelor Degree of Engineering when they have completed the required minimum credits and have met all other requirements.
