Undergraduate Major:Geology (Tourism Earth Science)

1. Major Introduction

Tourism Earth Science is a new interdiscipline of earth science and tourism, which specializes in study of the geological issues on tourism based on the theories and methods of earth sciences. The major of Geology (Tourism Earth Science) is a science specialty, combining geology and tourism. It is characterized by being based on geology, taking geopark as the main body and the geo-tourism as   expansion & extension. The research and application of tourism earth science has a wide range, related to basic geology, evaluation of geo-heritage resources, tourism geology, planning and management of geoparks, tourism development, tourism management and many other aspects.  

2. Academic Objectives

Students majoring in Geology (Tourism Earth Science) will systematically accept the professional training of basic geological theory, knowledge and skills, knowledge of all science, foreign language and related knowledge of tourism, especially obtain basic knowledge and skills of geoparks planning, development and management or related disciplines. With high scientific literacy, these students could engage in research and teaching of tourism earth science in institutes and schools, or they will become highlevel experts dealing with technological research, development and management in the fields of tourism development, tourism planning, geoparks, national parks and land resource management.

3. Academic Requirements

The graduates should be devoted to the motherland, support the leadership of the Communist Party of China, with characters of love, dedication, hard work, plain living, truth seeking, labour loving, law abiding, unity and cooperation. They should have good thoughts, personable character, social morality and professional ethics, as well as the strong ability of psychological adjustment and adaptation.

The students should have a solid foundation in natural science knowledge, and master basic theory, knowledge and skills of tourism earth science and related subjects, know well about the basic tourism earth science research processes, experimental methods, information collection and analytical skills, and understand frontier issues and developing trends of basic theory study. Students are trained with scientific innovative spirit through taking part in a number of scientific activities.

4. Length of Schooling and Degree

The length of schooling is four years of full-time study. Students will be awarded the Bachelor Degree of Science when they have completed the required minimum credits and have met all other requirements.

Specialized Core Courses: Quaternary Geology and Geomorphology, Remote Sensing Geology, Physical Geography and Human Geography, Eco-environmental Science, Introduction to Tourism, Introduction to Tourism Earth Science, Introduction to National Parks and Geoparks, Regional Analysis and Planning, Geographic Information System, Computer Geoscience Cartography, Specialty English for Tourism Earth Science.

Practice courses: Physics Experiments, Chemistry Experiments, Geological Survey Field Trip in Beidaihe, Geological Survey Field Trip in Zhoukoudian, Practice of Explanation and Tour Guide for Geopark, Geological Field Trip, Graduation Thesis.
