CUGB
Undergraduate Major:Earth Information Science and Technology( Big Data and Digital Earth )

1. Major Introduction

The major of the Earth Information Science and Technology, based onsystematical studying the basic principles and methodsof geology, is focusing on the mining, structure, and algorithm of big data in geology and its application with computer, artificial intelligence and digital technology as the core. Students are required not only to master the basic theories and knowledge of geology, build a solid foundation of mathematics and computer science, but also to achieve great sense of morality of science and team spirit. The application of big data in geology is relatively extensive, which involves fundamental research of geology, the development, utilization, and prediction of energy and mineral resources, forecast and evaluation of geological environment, geological hazards, and geological engeneering, etc.

The purpose of this major is to cultivate students' solid basic theory, basic knowledge, basic skills, and knowledge of related subjects. Students are required to have solid computer, data processing and analysis skills. After graduation, students with the practical work and technical management ability to engage in geological investigation, mineral resources exploration and development, seismic geology research, engineering stability, and environmental investigation and evaluation; meanwhile, they are preliminarily able to engage in geology scientific research and teaching in researching institutions and universities and colleges.

2. Academic Objectives

The Earth Information Science and Technology major is aiming to cultivate students' geological accomplishment, including training the basic geological theories, basic knowledge, basic skills, computer, and artificial intelligence-related discipline knowledge, as well as the data analysis and processing abilities. With good scientific literacy and the preliminary ability to work onresearch and teaching of geological data in institutes and universities, the students are to be competent and professional for basic geological research, energy development and resources utilization evaluation, geological environment disasters prediction, and big data development technology development and management.

3. Academic Requirements

Studentsin the major of Earth Information Science and Technology are supposed to be strong and healthy in bothbody and spirit, and meet the national requirments and standards for college studentson sport and military skills, as well as solid foundation, good scientific literacy and spirit of cooperation in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Undergraduate students should be proficient in fundamental theories, skills and knowledge on geology and data science by systematic education of core courses of geology and big data. Furthermore, students are expected to be familiar with the general process of experiment and research in geology and data science according totraining courses regarding originality of thought and practical application. Encouraging and organizing students to participate academic activities during undergraduate studies will certainly facilitate their passions and skills in big data mining, algorithm development and consequent application. Moreover, undergraduates will have a broad view on frontier issues and dynamic trends of geological big data, and they would have a stable capacity in problem-solving witha spirit of innovation.
