CUGB
Undergraduate Major:Safety Engineering

1. Major Introduction

Safety Engineering is an integrated discipline based on theories of safety technologies and special professional measures. It aims to guarantee the health and safety of people, reduce loss of equipment or property during the process of disaster prevention and defence. This discipline is founded on theories of safety science drawn from reliability engineering, safety management and the study of the common theories of various safety technologies in order to explore the general rules in safety engineering and provide advice on tasks related to safety technology and safety management.

We insist on 2Es (emphasizing) and 3Os (orienting) in our major construction. 2Es refers to a basic knowledge system being emphasized for broader suitability while practical ability is emphasized for higher competence. 3Os refers to a modern, global and prospective vision being oriented here.

We also pursue “123” approaches in our major construction.These approaches refer to our dedication towards perfecting professional education, driving adults-safety education and social-safety education, and conducting training for high hazard industries, for primary levels and for the whole of society.

Having studied systematically in this discipline, the students will not only master the basic theories, but also broaden their knowledge and skills of safety engineering. They will meet the ability requirements for general safety management, supervision and related research in different industries such as geology, construction, coal mining, chemical engineering, transportation, aviation, petroleum, harbours and engineering abroad.

2. Academic Objectives

Through education and experience of the five academic course models which are Required Courses of General Education, Disciplinary Fundamental Courses, Specialized Core Courses and Practices and Innovation. the students will acquire essential knowledge and special skills which meet the major requirements. In order to meet the academic objectives of thick-theories, wide-knowledge and deep-professional competency, they are also encouraged to construct good personal qualities such as devotion to their work, being hardworking and plain-living, being realistic and pragmatic, regulatory compliant and so on. In order to cultivate management-technology composite safety professionals, they can undertake the work of safety management, safety technology, safety assessment and training issues.

3. Academic Requirements

According to the requirements of the National Excellent Engineering Program, the International Engineering Education Certification Program and the National Major Catalogue and Specifications, we develop a total, detailed program and curriculum system based on our university vision which is a composite of specialization and excellent quality, and the academic requirements of good-quality, thick-theories, wide-knowledge and deep-professional competency. This program insists on the principle of all-round development for the students, combining general education with professional education, combining creative education with professional education, combining a curriculum system with updating teaching contents, combining long-term targets with short-term targets, and combining general courses with high hazard industry requirements.

After the four year course, the students should acquire the following knowledge and abilities:

(1) Basic knowledge in natural science, social science and integrated foreign language ability;

(2) Basic knowledge, theories and experiment skills in electrical and electronic technology, fluid mechanics, engineering mechanics, underground engineering and industrial safety engineering;

(3) Basic knowledge on reliability engineering, safety principles, contemporary safety management, system safety engineering, safety ergonomic, accident analysis and control, laws and regulations on safety, safety behavior science, safety economic and safety assessment;

(4) The abilities related to the safety technology of special equipment, industrial toxic substances control, computer-ventilation design, safety stimulation and safety information management;

(5) Basic abilities of searching index references both in Chinese and English, and acquiring related information by modern information technology. The ability of designing certain experiments, creating experiment conditions, analyzing experiment results and academic exchanges;

(6) A strong body and healthy mind and basic military knowledge.

4. Length of Schooling and Degree

The length of schooling is four years of full-time study. Students will be awarded the Bachelor Degree of Engineering when they have completed the required minimum credits and have met all other requirements.
