CUGB
Undergraduate Major:Geographic Information Science

1. Major Introduction

Geographic Information Science (GIS) is a comprehensive discipline which studies the theories and technology to collect, store, manage, analyze, display, distribute, and utilize spatial data, drawing on computer science, database, remote sensing, surveying and mapping, geographical sciences, and management. It can be widely used in region planning, urban construction, natural resources exploring, disaster monitoring and predicting, ecological research, etc. The program of GIS focuses on cultivating the professional talents who have both solid basis of the theory and strong practical ability and the academic talents who choose further study on geoinformatics.

2. Academic Objectives

Aiming at cultivating multi-level compound innovative talents with the background of geosciences, this program educates future engineers for participation in geographic information system, remote sensing, satellite positioning and cartography aspects with solid spatial data processing and analysis theory, basic knowledge and technology, with creation energy and practical ability. Students can take the responsibility of doing jobs as teaching, research, designing, and software development and management. They will also be capable of works of application research, technology development, production management, and administrative management related to cities, regions, resources, environment, transport, population, land, infrastructure, planning and management.

3. Academic Requirements

This program cultivates the professional and academic talents who love their motherland, have virtuous morality, and are physically and psychologically healthy. Students mainly learn the basic theory and knowledge of geographic information system, cartography, remote sensing science, and computer science and technology. In addition, the students will receive practical training about basic research and technique development. The graduates are capable of designing, developing, maintaining and managing spatial information system, so they can take the responsibility of education, research and engineering development.

4. Length of Schooling and Degree

The length of schooling is four years of full-time study. Students will be awarded the Bachelor Degree of Science when they have completed the required minimum credits and have met all other requirements.

5. Core Courses

Specialized Core Courses: GIS Design and Development, Three-dimensional GIS, Spatial Analysis in GIS, Geo-statistics, Digital Image Processing, Specialty English for GIS, Urban GIS, Remote Sensing Applications in Geosciences, Monitoring and Evaluation of Land Resources.
